The question to guide learning

There is a lot of learning that goes on in a classroom throughout a year. We have curriculum and hidden curriculum and each carry their own merit. For students, to help them connect their learning to the bigger picture and give them a more meaningful learning experience,  in grade 8 science and math, we will be using a question to guide our learning:

“Who are you as a scientist or mathematician and how will you change the world?”

We will use this question throughout the year to help students gain perspective, connect with science and math and see how both of these disciplines are interrelated with each other, the humanities and most importantly their day-to-day life.

Next week the grade 8’s will be going on a field trip to Beakerhead. Beakerhead is a street event that fuses science, engineering and the arts. Through hands-on activities, art and culture, students will see the advances in understanding in the fields of science and engineering as part of our everyday life. Students will be encouraged to immerse themselves in a world of collision (between art and science) and collaboration with their peers for the day. When we return from the field trip, students will be asked to produce a product (of their choice) that aligns with our guiding question and how Beakerhead helped to spark passion or ignite an idea that applies.

Until next time,
Mr. B
